Posted: Sun Dec 21, 2014 4:06 pm Post subject: FORD 3600 - Hydraulics slow
The Hydraulics are slow when lifting a weight on the 3 point linkage and on the front bucket. Reving the engine does not speed up the rate of lift, as it use to do.
I have replaced the hyd oil, new filter on the gear driven pump (left side engine), new hyd pump and I am still having the same problem.
I suspect that it might be the flow control valve that could be the problem. Or perhaps the setting of it has been moved and needs to be corrected.
Can someone advise just where I should look next. I currently have the hyd life cover off the tractor. Should I remove the flow control valve and rebuild it, or should I put it back together and test it first? Do these tractors have alot of issues with the flow control valve.

In addition I was looking for a inlet filter inside the centre axle housing, but I couldn't find one. I was told that there was a hidden filter. I also checked the parts diagrams and they list a filter for some models and apparently none for the model with a engine gear driven hyd pump.
Is there a filter? My initial thoughts centred around a blocked filter, but that wasn't the case.

Hi Shaun.
Sure hope there is a screen.
What do you mean by pull the PTO shaft. Do you mean by pull the PTO shaft?
I thought I had searched pretty well for the screen, so it must be well hidden. I even checked the end of the large pipe that I thought was the inlet in the sump and it was an angle cut pipe with no filter. So I am alittle confused and hopeful.
Tks Darrin.

If the pump has its own spin-on filter, then there is no need for a screen inside.
Flow control valves and system relief valves are fairly problem free. Myself, I would test the pump output directly with a flowmeter and start there. I have seen a 3600 shear the dowel pin for the cam drive gear before. It's not very common, but it can happen.

Thanks Bern.
No screen inside makes more sense. Yes the pump has a spin on filter.
The dowel pin for the cam drive gear would be within the engine then? Which is more problematic.

Hi Bern
if its the dowel then one suspects that the pump would stop all together. Or is it possible that it is slipping.
Will have to find a flow meter as I haven't seen one before.

The dowel pin is #37. The quickest way to check it would be to remove the pump and stick a flat prybar down into the hole and rotate the gear. If the engine spins with the gear, the dowel pin is fine.
If that checks out, and your pump is new, your problem almost has to be in the back. With a flowmeter, you could check the pump output directly, and then compare that reading with the oil output you have at the back.

Darrin, on a 3600, the flow control valve should have a handle that rotates from 'slow' to 'fast' response. You adjust the response. Do you have this feature on your valve? Maybe this handle fallen off? IIRC, fast is CCW. I was fooling with mine a while back, and in the 'slow' position it is really slow.
Go to the New Holland Online Parts Store and look at the flow control valve for a 3600.

Hi Sixbales.
Yes this was in the back of my mind that perhaps somehow the flow control was adjusted to the slow position. I am in the process of reassembling and will test that first. Tractor was loaned out for the last 2 years and I am not sure what happened to make it go so slow.
I can adjust the flow, but I have to put a pair of pliers on the rod as it appears that the knob is way gone. But it moves easily enough.
Failing that I will have to get a flow meter and check the flow rates and the pin on the camshaft.
Thanks for you reply. Darrin

Thanks Bern for your post.
I suspect its not the pin. Will check the flow control valve first then use a flow meter. That should hopefully lead me in the right direction.

In 1907 Henry Ford built his first experimental tractor. He spent many years and more than $600,000 dollars developing a good, inexpensive tractor which he gave the name of 'Fordson'. A new company, 'Henry Ford & Son' was created to mass produce the tractors. By 1920, the distribution of the Fordson was shifted to the Ford Motor Company. Over the years Ford has produced many models of tractors and continues to this day to be a leading manufacturer in the industry. Some of the most popular tractors they produced were models 8N, 9N, 2N, NAA, Jubilee, 541, 600, 601, 641, 700, 740, 800, 801, 841, 850, 860, 861, 901, 960, 1700, 1710, 1720, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000 and 6600.
